That question moved from theory to reality when Reuters reported on April 21, 2026 that Meta is installing tracking software on U.S.-based employees’ computers to capture mouse movements, clicks, keystrokes, and occasional screen snapshots for AI model training. You read that, correctly.
That is why this matters beyond Meta. The bigger business-law issue is not just whether one company can do this. It is what legal, employment, privacy, labor, governance, and documentation issues companies should review before they try anything similar, or before they buy tools from vendors that do. Reuters reported that Meta says the tool is part of a larger effort to build AI agents that can handle routine computer tasks autonomously, and that the company says the captured data will not be used for performance evaluations.

That matters because it turns a familiar employer-monitoring issue into something more specific and more consequential. This is not just about supervision, productivity, or security. It is about using employee behavior itself as raw material to train AI systems. That raises different questions about consent, notice, confidentiality, ownership of work product, internal policy, employee relations, and how a company explains the practice if challenged later. The factual basis for that concern comes directly from Reuters’ reporting on the training purpose and the types of data Meta plans to collect.
Reuters also reported that Meta says safeguards exist for sensitive content, but did not publicly explain which categories of data are excluded. That gap matters. review who can access the collected data and whether it is segregated from performance-management functions
involve legal, HR, IT, security, and leadership before any rollout, not after employee backlash or regulator interest
Those steps are worthwhile whether a company adopts the Meta-style approach or rejects it. The point is not that every company should copy Meta, or that no company ever could. The point is that this kind of monitoring raises a stack of issues that should be reviewed intentionally before the business moves forward.
